The Minister of Transport, H. E. GOUNOKO HAOUNAYE visits CNIC’s installations in Limbe and Douala.

 The Minister of Transport, H. E. Gounoko HAOUNAYE recently paid a working visit to the industrial facilities of the Cameroon Shipyard and Industrial Engineering ltd. (CNIC) in Limbe and Douala within the framework of a visit of services and companies under the supervisory Authority of his Ministry. 

 Beginning from Limbe on Tuesday 30th October, the Minister who was accompanied by a 13-man delegation including an Inspector General, a Technical Adviser and four Directors was conducted to the industrial site of the on-going Limbe Shipyard Project (LSP). Here, he not only visited the completed Breakwater (Lot 1) but also witnessed rehabilitation works on a semi-submersible oil rig - SCARABEO 3 currently underway at the site due to the anticipated use of the facility.

The Minister was there after conducted to the Batoke Quarry which constitutes a primary source of rock materials for the execution of the project. Three days later on Friday 2nd November, the minister and his entourage were conducted through CNIC/UIC main repair facilities in Douala. Starting at UIC, the Minister visited the workshop and later, the construction project of a drill barge named SAIPEM TAD. The last two stops of the visit were at CNIC’s biggest repair site (Berth 17) where he witnessed multiple dry-docking works including servicing on the ACERGY ORION vessel before being led to the Training centre where he met a contingent of a total of 240 young Cameroonians undergoing pre-employment internship at CNIC. 

The Minister ended his visit with a stop at Berth 4 to witness and appreciate diverse life-extension works on the jack-up oil rig TRIDENT XIV which was initially received at CNIC’s repair facility in Limbe in December 2006 for preliminary works before being moved to Douala for the commencement of major works in early February 2007. 

 

The Minister’s Impressions

Giving his impressions to the press about the visit, the Minister stated that: “CNIC is an industrial complex expected to serve as a catalyst for the industrialization of Cameroon.” Speaking further, he described the Limbe Shipyard Project as “a window on the world enabling CNIC to become a centre of reference not only for Cameroon but also for the Central and West African sub-region thereby making our country to play a major role in this domain requiring a high mastery of technology.”
