CNIC DISMANTLES BARGE OVER THE RIVER MUNGO.

The Barge transformed and installed in August 2004 to service traffic across the river Mungo following the collapse in July 2004, of the reunification bridge over this river has now been dismantled.

The dismantling of the pontoon, initially a cargo barge christened “CNIC 3”, comes after close to three years of use from 30th August 2004 to 15th June 2007 when the new permanent bridge was commissioned.

Although the removal of the pontoon was a purely technical operation devoid of any official pronouncements, it is remembered that in the trail of the severe socio-economic and political consequences of the collapse of the historic bridge, the Government requested CNIC to provide an urgent technological solution enabling fluidity of the movement of persons and goods between the rest of the country via Douala or the Littoral Province and the entire South West Province.

It is in recognition of this contribution that after glowing tribute to CNIC from then Prime Minister - P.M. MUSONGE - at the inauguration of the barge in 2004, the Mayor of Tiko echoed:

“As we rejoice and thank the Government for the construction of this new bridge, we want to once more say thank you to the Cameroon Shipyard whose mastery of technology and timely intervention prevented the prolonged suffering of the population…”

The barge whose dismantling began on 16th November 2007 left its position at the Mungo a week later (24th November) back to CNIC’s repairs facilities in Douala where it will undergo re-inspection and necessary renovation works ahead of deployment for offshore operations.
